The house was formerly known as Cwrt-y-Carw, (Stags Court) and is set on the site of a 15th century Fortified Manor House with a Gatehouse dating back to 1480. This has recently having been lime washed and is a landmark and a principal feature of Crickhowell, a thriving picturesque idyllic small market town – known for its people who “smile and say hello!”
Porthmawr being a historical site takes full advantage of the most spectacular 360% views of The Usk Basin, Brecon Beacons in the backdrop, Llangattock Escarpment (a nature reserve with one of the largest cave systems in Europe) to the south and spectacular views of the Black Mountains immediately bounding the north of the site. This range features The Table Mountain or Grug Hwyel which means Hywel’s rock aptly named after Hywel Dda the Welsh ruler of the 8th century whose laws still exist today in terms of land ownership and the originator of women’s rights- who could divorce their husbands for even having bad breath whilst keeping the poultry in the cooking pot!( many more tales to be told.).

The present house was built as the Mansion House of Crickhowell and used for sometime as a private bank by the Seymour family. The medieval preserved gatehouse formed part of a Royalist strong-hold and CADW (Welsh Ancient Buildings Conservation) state this as “one of the most important scheduled monuments in private ownership in Wales”, in which you may wish to relax, enjoy a glass of wine overlooking the lawns where Charles 1 once stayed hosted by the wife of Sir John Herbert his trusted knight in armour, whilst plotting his revenge on Oliver Cromwell (more tales to be told).
