The House

About Porthmawr Country House

Porthmawr House is set on the site of a 15th century fortified manor house, with a gatehouse dating back to 1480 and grounds approaching 3 acres, and is a landmark and a principal feature of Crickhowell, a thriving picturesque idyllic small market town – known for its people who “smile and say hello!”

This 5 star property, with a colourful history making this one of the most important scheduled monuments in private ownership in Wales,  takes full advantage of spectacular 360º views of The Usk Basin, the Brecon Beacons, Llangattock Escarpment (a nature reserve with one of the largest cave systems in Europe) to the south and spectacular views of the Black Mountains immediately bounding the north of the site.

Notwithstanding these open views, the site is secluded, being set behind a twelve feet high castellated stonewall, making this a discreet and peaceful setting protected from public gaze yet enjoying magnificent sunsets over the Brecon Beacons from the terraces.

The Regency house retains many period features and is furnished with antiques and fine pieces of art. Several reception rooms make this an ideal venue for house parties and large gatherings of friends and family, with the dining room seating 33.

A separate banqueting room provides a fantastic alternative setting for your special occasion or wedding party, with room for over 90 guests, and the possibility of adding a marquee to accommodate larger numbers if required. There are no set formats for weddings at Porthmawr – we hold a civil license and are happy to help you organize your individual celebration, and to work with you to ensure your day or weekend is perfect.

Porthmawr also has its excellent catering team available for special dinner parties for large group celebrations whether it is a family birthday, wedding anniversary or corporate event. Locally sourced ingredients such as welsh lamb, venison, Black Mountain smoked duck are amongst some of the specialty dishes on offer via separate and competitive quotation.

Walk in the mountains, stroll around the shops restaurants and pubs, stay in the Mansion and experience local cuisine. Relax and enjoy!
